Richard Crookes was born in Preston, Lancashire, England in 1960. Experienced with digital images as well as in traditional art techniques, Richard has been working as a full-time freelance artist for over 30 years, providing illustrations for the publishing industries as well as exhibiting, selling his fine artwork and working to commission.

Taking up traditional calligraphy studies in 1996, Richard went on to study on the 3-year advanced training scheme of The Society of Scribes and Illuminators from which he graduated in 2002. Early watercolour work taught him the importance of retaining luminosity and atmospherics within the new disciplines of digital artwork, which he also now uses as a new tool in re-animating traditional illustration and calligraphic techniques for new media. He is currently dividing his time between living in Bangkok, Thailand and the UK.
